How long does an installation take?

"How long will my vehicle be with you?" It's one of the first questions every customer asks. The honest answer: it depends on the upgrade, your vehicle, and whether custom fabrication is involved. Here's what to expect.

What affects installation time?

Several factors influence how long an installation will take. Every vehicle is different, which is why installation times can vary even when fitting similar equipment.

A rough guide

Typical installation timeframes.

Every project is different, but this gives a general sense of how upgrade complexity relates to time on the workshop floor.

The quickest upgrade

Speaker installation.

Replacing factory speakers is one of the quickest upgrades. If sound deadening is added at the same time, additional time should be allowed. See our beginner's guide to car audio for how speakers fit into the wider system.

  • Removing door trims & factory speakers
  • Installing mounting adapters if required
  • Connecting, testing & reassembling
More involved

Amplifier installation.

Installing an amplifier requires considerably more work than replacing speakers. Careful cable routing and professional finishing take time but ensure long-term reliability.

  • Routing a power cable from the battery
  • Fuse protection & signal cable routing
  • Mounting, configuring & testing
Depends on the enclosure

Subwoofer installation.

Pre-built enclosures can usually be installed relatively quickly. Custom enclosures require measuring, design, fabrication, test fitting and finishing — they take longer, but maximise both performance and available vehicle space.

See our guide on choosing the right subwoofer size for more.

Planning over speed

Complete audio systems.

A full system may include component speakers, rear speakers, an amplifier, subwoofer, DSP, sound deadening and custom fabrication. Each component must be integrated into the overall system before final tuning begins — these projects require careful planning rather than speed.

Modern vehicles are complex

Vehicle complexity matters.

Installers often work around airbags, parking sensors, factory amplifiers, infotainment systems, digital communication networks and advanced interior trim. Protecting these systems is just as important as installing the audio equipment itself.

The extra steps that matter

Why professional installations take longer.

A quality installation includes much more than fitting equipment. These extra steps take time, but they're essential for achieving reliable, professional results — read more in our guide on why professional installation matters.

Planning your day

Can I wait while it's installed?

For smaller upgrades, waiting may be possible depending on the work being carried out. More complex installations usually require the vehicle to remain at the workshop to allow sufficient time for testing and quality control. Your installer will advise the expected completion time before work begins.

Fast isn't the goal

Why quality should always come first.

Fast installation isn't necessarily good installation. Taking shortcuts can result in loose wiring, interior rattles, electrical faults, poor sound quality and premature equipment failure. Professional workmanship focuses on doing the job properly the first time.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

Can I drive my vehicle immediately after installation?+
Yes. Once the installation has been completed and tested, your vehicle is ready to drive as normal.
Will my vehicle be tested before collection?+
Professional installers should test every component to ensure the system performs correctly before returning the vehicle.
Why does custom fabrication take longer?+
Custom fabrication involves designing and building components specifically for your vehicle, which naturally requires additional time and precision.
Does adding sound deadening increase installation time?+
Yes, but it's often worthwhile because it significantly improves speaker performance and reduces unwanted vibrations.
Is tuning included in the installation?+
Professional installations should always include system setup and basic tuning to ensure the equipment performs correctly.
Can I wait at the workshop while my car is done?+
For smaller upgrades, waiting may be possible depending on the work being carried out. More complex installations usually require the vehicle to remain at the workshop for testing and quality control.
What should I do to prepare my vehicle for installation?+
Remove valuable personal belongings, empty the boot if required, advise the installer of any existing electrical issues, and discuss your expectations and collection arrangements beforehand.
